Matthew grew up in Toms River, NJ, where curiosity and interest in the world influenced his early ambitions. The professional backgrounds of his parents, in law and psychology, also shaped his perspective, encouraging a mix of critical thought and awareness of human behavior. Together with a strong academic focus, these influences contributed to his decision to pursue a career in journalism.
He first attended a boarding school in Pennsylvania, where he built the foundation for his higher education. Later, he studied at Clark University in Massachusetts, where he majored in Political Science and Psychology. These fields provided him with insight into the behavior of both individuals and institutions, helping him understand how stories are framed for audiences.
In 1993, after completing his Bachelor of Arts degree, he moved to New York City to start his career in television. His first job was as an Assistant to the Executive Producer at King World TV, a company recognized for syndicating widely known shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and Jeopardy. This role introduced him to the pace and demands of television production and gave him the chance to learn under experienced leadership.
Carluccio later joined NBC as an Associate Producer for Dateline NBC. There, he contributed to investigative reports, general assignments, and long-format journalism. His responsibilities included research, writing, editing, off-air reporting, and booking guests. This role allowed him to develop a broad skill set and deepen his understanding of broadcast journalism.
Over time, he produced hundreds of reports, further sharpening his editorial judgment. He also took on demanding field assignments, including covering Operation Iraqi Freedom from Jordan, Iraq, and Afghanistan. After a period working with NBC’s Chicago Bureau, he was chosen to lead a task force covering the criminal case involving Michael Jackson in Southern California.
By 2005, Matthew transitioned to TODAY, working as an anchor producer. In this position, he frequently traveled with on-air talent to cover major events and produce international broadcasts. These included work from Cuba, Belize, the Vatican, and a landmark broadcast from Antarctica, where he contributed to the first live network news report from the South Pole Station. He was also heavily involved in NBC’s coverage of multiple Olympic Games, beginning in Torino in 2006 and extending through Beijing in 2022.
Management
In 2008, he became Supervising Producer at TODAY. Here, he was responsible for daily assignments and managing a team of ten. By 2011, he was promoted to Senior Producer, where he oversaw the program’s first hour, handled editorial decisions, and directed a team of producers, writers, and researchers. Under his leadership, TODAY continued to hold its place as the number one morning show for 16 consecutive years.
In 2014, Carluccio advanced to Executive Producer of the weekend editions of TODAY. In this role, he oversaw all editorial and production responsibilities, while also mentoring new on-air talent who went on to hold prominent roles within the program.
In 2016, he was given the opportunity to create a new extension of the TODAY brand, which became Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist. Nearly ten years later, the program has proven to be both a ratings success and a respected part of NBC’s news lineup.
By 2020, his role expanded again when he was named Executive Producer of NBC News Specials. This position placed him in charge of producing coverage of national and global events, including elections, debates, conventions, inaugurations, state funerals, and other significant moments. Some of his recent work has included coverage of the funeral and election of the Pope, the passing of Queen Elizabeth, the coronation of King Charles, and the 2024 Presidential election cycle.
His leadership has been recognized through numerous awards and accolades. Matthew has received four Emmy Awards for TODAY and two additional Emmys for NBC News Specials.
